Science - Experiment

Aim - To make acid-base indicators using everyday substances

______________________________________________________________

Method - For cabbage and beetroot.

1. Chop the cabbage into small pieces until you have enough to  fill 2 cups.

2. Place the cabbage in a large beaker and add water to cover the cabbage.

3. Boil over a Bunsen burner for at least ten minutes for the color to leach out of the cabbage.

4. Filter out the plant material to obtain a red-purple-bluish colored liquid this liquid is at about pH 7.

5. Place in a small beaker and leave it to one side

6. Repeat this method for the beetroot.

Discussion: For this experiment, we did not really do task one because our science room was in a classroom so that means there will be no gas to plug in the Bunsen burner. At first for the Cranberry I thought the color would not change when we put the acid because it was that same color before we put some acids. but then as we move on to the Alkali, we put a little bit of that and it actually turns into a different color which is the color green. We did the same thing in the Beetroot, Turmeric, cabbage and tea all of them had a different color for the Acid and Alkali. we did this experiment to see the different indicators the ones we used were original indicators to see if stuff were an acid or base.

Conclusion: I really have enjoyed doing that experiment because it's just really satisfying to watch the colors change. I am looking more forward to the next science experiment we are attending.
