Science - Solar System

 Solar System

Aim:

To make a realistic solar system.

Research:

The solar system is what makes our world go round. It consists of earth and many other planets. The sun is actually a star and we orbit around it. The solar system is the gravitationally bound system of the sun and the objects that orbit it. Either directly or indirectly. Of the objects that orbit the sun directly, the largest are the eight planets with the remainder being smaller objects.

Equipment:

Cardboard

Paints

String

Balloons

Ping pong balls

Paper Mache

Method:

  • Use cardboard as a structure.

  • Paint background black with stars.

  • Make the planets using ping pong balls, balloons and paper mache.

  • Paint them.

  • Hang them up on the structure using string.

Volcano Eruption

Aim: To erupt the Volcano

Method: We used a scrap board and Tristan Brought a 1-litre bottle. We then stick the bottle into the cardboard. After that we cover the bottle with newspaper, forming the look of the Mayon Volcano. On the second day of science after the glue had dried, we then painted our volcano colour maroon as the first coat. After a few minutes, the brown paint had dried, and we now need to put the final coat which is the colour green.

Research: Mayon, also known as Mount Mayon and Mayon Volcano, is an active stratovolcano in the province of Albay in Bicol Region, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Mayon Volcano last erupt in early January 2018. The myth of the creation of Mayon Volcano is as heated as the heart of the peak itself, with a plot involving star-crossed lovers, and a tragic ending leading to the rise of the jewel of Albay. Legend has it that a beautiful maiden, Magayon, lived in a place called Ibalon.

Results:

Discussion: Volcanoes erupt when molten rock called magma comes up to the surface. As the magma rises, bubbles of gas from inside it. Runny magma erupts through openings or vents in the earth's crust before flowing onto its surface as lava. If magma is thick, gas bubbles cannot easily escape and pressure builds up as the magma rises.

Conclusion: YesOur Volcano erupted and I personally thought it was the best because it went higher then the rest and it just shot up.

Solar Eclipse Blog - Science

Solar Eclipse

How do solar eclipses occur? - When the moon passes between the Sun and Earth, appearing to cover the disk of the Sun completely

What do we see when a solar eclipse occurs? - The Sun is completely hidden, revealing the full glory of the solar corona. The solar corona is basically just the hemisphere of the sun.

When was the last solar eclipse? - The last Solar eclipse in New Zealand was in 1965.

When is the next solar eclipse? - The next solar eclipse in New Zealand is on a Saturday and the date that it is on is the 22nd of July 2028

Kiwi fruit DNA

Aim: Finding DNA in a kiwi fruit

Method:

1. Mush half a kiwi fruit in a zip lock bag with a splash of water and a small teaspoon of salt.

2. Strain the solution through a cloth into a beaker.

3. Add a squirt of dishwashing liquid an stir.

4. Pour into a test tube.

5. Place the test tube in a beaker filled with WARM water.

6. Leave for 10 mins.

7. Slowly pour 5mL of methylated spirits down the side of the test tube.

Results:

Discussion: I found the DNA in the middle because once we added the methylated spirits it had three layers, the kiwi fruit mix, the DNA which was a white substance that smelt like alcohol and the methylated spirits, the DNA was in the nucleus and DNA make up chromosomes and they are also in the nucleus.

Trolly Dilemma - English

What would you do in the trolly project

Five people stuck on the railway and there's a trolly coming and you have to choose whether you turn away and let all five people die or you could help and only one person would die I think really you're going to be killing someone anyway and I'd rather be blamed for one death then being blamed for five. If you killed all five people, people would ask you why you chose to kill all five of them and not just the one. Killing all five people would honestly make you feel the worst but killing only one would still make you feel bad but you saved the other five lives.

  • I’d rather let one person die then let that one person and five others die as well. Because you’d be responsible for 6 deaths basically but if you let that one person die you would’ve saved 5 lives and you’d only have to tell one family that they have lost one of their loved ones, instead of having to tell 5 to 6 families that they have lost someone.

______________________________________________________________________________

(You are walking through a rail yard when you notice a runaway trolley careening your way. Directly in its path are five people, bound and lying across the tracks. They will die if nothing is done. There is a lever nearby. Pulling it will divert the trolley onto another track. On this other track, however, is a man who cannot hear or see you or the trolley. You can stand by and do nothing, watching as five innocent people die, or you can pull the lever, directly causing one man’s death. Which is the more ethical choice?)

The Trolley Problem: In this situation what I think I would do is pull the lever to sacrifice one man other than sacrificing all five people.

______________________________________________________________________________

(The dilemma is the same, except that you recognize the guy standing alone as the actor and comedian Jim Carrey. And this is “Dumb and Dumber”-era Jim Carrey. In fact, he’s in costume, and has that bowl haircut he sported in the eminently quotable 1994 film. Remembering all of those funny lines makes you smile. What a great movie. The five tied-up people are also Jim Carrey—clones, you assume—but they’re the modern, anti-vaxxer version, with full beards and dead eyes.)

The Jim Carrey: I would choose to only save the one person and let the other five die because the other five people are clones and aren’t real people, so I’d save the one real person and let the other five unreal people die.

______________________________________________________________________________

(In this variation there is no second track but there is another man standing nearby, between the trolley and the five helpless people. If you shove him onto the tracks, his body will likely stop the trolley. You know nothing about this man except that at this very moment he’s on his phone composing a tweet that begins with the word “thread.”

Also, he’s vaping.)

The Thread: I would choose to push the guy so the other five people can live, I would never forgive myself for five people’s deaths but for one it would still take awhile to forgive myself but at least I wouldn’t have to tell six families there loved ones have past, also that guy would be known as a hero

_____________________________________________________________________

(You can’t be a hundred percent sure, but it looks like the person standing alone is actually two small people, one standing on the other’s shoulders, sharing a long overcoat. Could they be children? Who are they trying to fool? And why? In any case, they’re probably up to no good.

Does that merit a death sentence, though?)

The long overcoat: I think that it's a bit suspicious that the kids are playing on the railway, so I think that I would save the five people and let that one person die, because the tall man with the long overcoat looked pretty suspicious meaning I didn’t know what he was upto, so I’d kill the one and save the other five

_____________________________________________________________________

(The lone man is Adolf Hitler. Actually, this one is kind of a no-brainer, isn’t it? Not sure why it’s even listed here.)

The Hitler:  What I would do is pull the lever to save the five people not just because it saves five people’s lives but because hitler was a bad man, who killed people who were so called not perfect.

Eco warriors

What did we do to help?

We went outside we were allowed around our whole school and we picked up as much rubbish as we could in 29 minutes. We managed to pick up more then a whole bucket.

What are your thoughts?

I think we should do this more often just to know were trying to do something about it and were not just listening to what the feed says. Do something about it.

What do you want people to know?

We need to save the world by picking up our rubbish and not littering because its kill the earth and mostly our sea life because there eating the rubbish which is our food source.

Social Studys - Protecting our planet

In the Antarctic ice is melting which means our sea level will rise which will cause major floods. The Polar bears habitats are going melt Scientists point out that sea levels have risen and fallen substantially over Earth's 4.6billion-year history.

But the recent rate of global sea level rise has departed from the average rate of the past two to three thousand years and is rising more rapidly about one tenth of an inch a year.

A continuation or acceleration of that trend has the potential to cause striking changes in the world's coastlines. Where the earthquakes hit

What did the video encourage us to think about?

How can we save the sea life, by throwing rubbish away properly and not littering so it gets to the ocean and the sea life eats it which then kills them.

What do you think about this?

I think it's sad that sea life is dying because of us not recycling properly. Most sea life produce for us as in whales fertilize the water keeping the sea life alive and it's basically 85% of our oxygen

What is something that you could do to reduce pollution?

Recycle properly
